The Essential Mathematics course is replacing the Prevocational Mathematics course and the Nelson QMaths 12 Essential Mathematics Student Book caters to students heading towards the workforce or further training after school. The student book features short chapters written in plain English with an emphasis on numeracy and literacy and supporting themes of sport, health, travel, house plans, building and energy. Investigations and Practical Activities explore the syllabus in detail through group work, while Keyword Activities focus on mathematical language learned in the chapter. The Solutions to the Chapter Problem section presents detailed solutions to problems using four stages: WHAT?, SOLVE, CHECK and PRESENT, for students to develop logical problem-solving skills.
