Letters and Sounds Book 2 is the third step in a planned series designed to develop the language skills necessary for young children to participate in our society. Letters and Sounds Book 2 aims to teach:
- handwriting
- letter/sound awareness (consonant blends & digraphs, selected short and long vowels)
In addition in this integrated approach, the following aspects of overall language development are introduced:
- consolidation of Book 1 sounds
- word building
- word recognition
- comprehension
- use of illustrations and stimulation for creative language both spoken and written
- blends, jingles and songs
- speech and pronunciation
- reading
- phonic spelling lists: word families and blends
- vocabulary development
- copy writing
- correct word activities
- read, write and draw activities
Letters and Sounds Book 2 is divided into two parts which are learnt concurrently. Part One teaches handwriting. Book 2 is available in Queensland Modern Cursive and will be available in NSW Foundation Style or Victorian Modern Cursive Script. Part Two teaches letter and sound awareness including consolidation of consonants/short vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, selected long and short vowels, activities and copy writing. In addition Letters and Sounds Book 2 contains a checklist of Word Attack skills and a Student Profile to use as a running record of each child's progress, as well as extensive teaching notes and suggestions
